The market for Cold Weather tyres has been steadily growing, and they are now produced by most of the major manufacturers. Put simply, they are designed for optimal safety on all wintry roads (snow, ice, dry or wet). The key temperature is 7 degrees centigrade. Beneath this temperature cold weather tyres will perform measurably better than their summer counterparts.
Here are some frequently asked questions (FAQs) about Cold Weather tyres |
Q. Is it enough in winter just to drive more slowly?
A. Below 7 degrees centigrade, when braking on a wet road from just 50 mph, you could stop in as little as 34 metres with Cold Weather tyres, compared to a possible 40 metres with Summer tyres.
Q. Are Cold Weather tyres only for use on snowy roads?
A. They are designed for optimal safety on all wintry roads irrespective of whether snow is present or not.
Q. Are Cold Weather tyres just for use in mountainous or hilly areas?
A. During the winter months you can be faced with bad weather conditions wherever you go and particularly untreated urban areas.
Q. Can I use Snow Chains instead of Cold Weather tyres?
A. Snow Chains are only designed for use on very snowy roads. On some vehicles there can be clearance problems between the tyres and the bodywork and it is recommended that you do not exceed 37 mph when using this equipment.
Q. Do Cold Weather tyres wear out more quickly?
A.There is no evidence to support this, and they certainly perform better in winter conditions.
Q. Does the use of Cold Weather tyres mean more expense?
A. Initially yes, as cold weather tyres cost a little more. However, each mile travelled is a mile saved on your summer tyres, and the increased mobility obtained as a benefit from the use of Cold Weather could save both time and money, not to mention greater safety!

We are always happy to offer advice on the fitment of Cold Weather tyres. We also operate a tyre 'hotel' for the storage of your cold weather tyres during the summer months and for your summer tyres during the winter period. There is currently no storage charge for this service, merely a service fee for changing and rebalancing the tyres at the appropriate time of year. |
